Shut Down Your Thoughts, Change the World With Your Gifts
Have you ever heard the saying, “you can do whatever you set your mind to”? Duh. Of course you have. It’s hard to escape these sentiments while living in this self-help society, right? Sometimes I scroll through my social media channels and literally glaze over from all of the woo-woo.
Don’t get me wrong- I have nothing against woo-woo. I mean, to each her own…these days a girl has to do whatever she possibly can to escape the realities of life and try to feel better inside. Sometimes that may mean energy healing and pulling cards from a deck to change your outlook on the crap this world has been piling on us lately.
I’m a little too cynical to fully believe in some of the new-agey stuff. Maybe my background in nursing has contributed to that. But being a nurse has also made me really try to understand where people are coming from, so there’s absolutely no judgement from me when people do whatever they can to feel right inside. No matter how you
But here’s the thing: you really can do whatever you set your mind to.
Let that sink in for a minute.
There is nothing that you can’t accomplish if you set your mind straight to it. The big problem is drowning out all of your thoughts and fears. I can talk myself out of anything. Just last night I talked myself out of washing and moisturizing my face before bed…I heard that you age your skin 2 WEEKS every time you go to bed with makeup on. Girl, I’m on the slippery side of my 40’s- I don’t have the luxury of another 2 weeks on this face but I STILL TALKED MYSELF OUT OF IT.
So I’ve realized that the trick is to turn off your damn thoughts.
I read this book recently called The 5-Second Rule by Mel Robbins and she talked about just this. Her concept is that you have 5 seconds to make a thought an action and if you wait longer than that, you’ll talk yourself out of it. In my case, this is the absolute truth! Her theory is that you should count down from 5 and just DO IT. Without any further thought, just do the thing.
So, I’ve been trying really hard to count down 5-4-3-2-1 GO every time I have an idea and just go for it. A couple of days ago, I emailed the president of Lamaze International just to let her know about myself, my company and what we’re up to. I hit send feeling pretty proud of myself! Imagine how excited I was when she emailed me back to say thank you for reaching out, that she’s thrilled I’m being innovative to reach mamas and that she’s going to check out the app!
So basically, I set my mind to sending that email. But the part that’s missing from that statement is that I basically shut down my thoughts and fears so I would actually hit “send”.
How many times have you tossed away a great idea or opportunity because you talked yourself out of it? I know I’ve missed so much. Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?
I don’t want to bother her, she doesn’t care about what I have to say, I’m not smart enough to speak up about this...
Or my personal favourite:
If this is such a great idea, why hasn’t anyone else thought it up?
You’ve got to just do it. Whenever you have a thought, whenever you are struggling to get something done- 5-4-3-2-1 and just do it.
It’s time to stop feeling crappy about ourselves because we can’t seem to:
- accomplish small jobs
- de-clutter our lives
- move ahead in our careers
- get unstuck from relationships that aren't making us happy
And it's time to start trusting our gut to know what’s best for us without our brains interfering.
Can you imagine what women can accomplish if we just do that?
You can do whatever you set your mind to, Mama. I believe in your unlimited potential and I hope you can turn off the thoughts of doubt long enough to see it too. The world needs you to step into your power and be amazing. There's so much room for improvement in the world right now and you've got nothing to lose but so much to gain.

Joanne Ilaqua - CEO of MamaSoup
Hey there, I’m Joanne.
I’ve spent about 20 years serving women as a nurse, doula and Lamaze educator. I have 4 kids and I know firsthand how lonely and isolating motherhood can be, so I created MamaSoup. I'm mostly known for my love of red wine, spontaneously singing and my confidence in being my true self on social media. When I’m not busy building women up, you can catch me taking Instagram stories of my bulldog Ruby, watching The Handmaid’s Tale, playing MUber (Mom Uber) to my kids or vacationing in my favourite town: Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
I love serving the world by providing a space for moms to connect and support each other. In my opinion, moms are the backbone of communities because they are (literally) raising the future!
As the founder and CEO of MamaSoup, I’ve been featured on CHEX TV Morning Show, KawarthaNOW, Economic Development- The City of Kawartha Lakes and MyKawartha.
Still with me? Join me over at MamaSoup to keep the conversation going!
